Suggeseted itinerary from Christchurch, including Mt Cook & West Coast
Day 1
Sample a sunrise over the Canterbury Plains
Allow five hours for the journey to Mount Cook, stopping at the pastel blue Lake Tekapo and Pukaki. Take a photo of the surrounding mountains framed by the altar window at the little stone Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo
In the afternoon take a helicopter flight or a short scenic walk
Day 2
Relax in the beautiful surroundings of Mount Cook or take a boat trip on a glacial lake (October - May)
Enjoy a meal of local salmon in a spectacular setting
Day 3
Ride the TranzAlpine Express to Greymouth or drive via Arthur's Pass (4 - 5 hours)
In the afternoon visit famous Pancake Rocks and drive north to Cape Foulwind and the fur seal colony
Day 4
Visit Shantytown in Greymouth for a spot of gold panning, or…
Take a cave-rafting trip
Drive to Hokitika (30 minutes) to see the greenstone showrooms
Continue south to the glaciers (two hours)
Day 5
Go for a guided walk, a scenic flight or a helihike to explore the glaciers
After lunch drive to Lake Matherson and enjoy a short bushwalk to see the lake's reflection of Mount Cook
